HPL Training Resources

This guide contains information training resources for HPL staff.

Shipment

  • Shipment is the crate that comes weekly from the main campus library. It includes CLICS, ILL, letters, toners, other supplies, etc.
  • CLICS (CUNY Libraries Inter-Campus Services) is a service that allows you to have books delivered from almost anywhere in the CUNY library system to the Hunter campus. Refer to the CLICS page for more information.
  • The shipment also includes new books/materials to add to the library.
  • Patrons can return book from any CUNY libraries at our library.
  • When patron is returning a book from a different library, the book needed to be scanned on the return items and scan in items section on ALMA.
  • After scanning the book, Alma tells you the next destination of the book, which usually is the library that the book came from.
  • On a piece of paper, write the college/library name and slip it into the book with the name sticking out of the book. Then, place the book in the crate. These books will get processed by the main campus library when sent during the weekly shipment.
  • New books with a yellow or pink slip/tab should be left on Donna's or reference desk.  Do not shelve these books because they need additional processing.

Book Types

  • Reserve books are items that can be borrowed by patrons for 2 hours. These books are situated behind the circulation desk. The books will say reserve on the book’s spine. These books can’t leave the library. Patrons must use reserve books only in the library.

  • Stacks books are located on the second floor of the library with the white labels on the side with the call number. These books can be borrowed for 28 days or longer and can be taken outside of the library. Because these books can be taken out of the library, the books have to be desensitized. To do this, slide the book’s spine on the desensitizing machine multiple times. This is done so that the book doesn’t turn on the alarm when patrons leave with the books. When the books are returned, you sensitize them by sliding the book on the sensitizing machine. Both these machines are located next to the circulation computer.

  • Reference books are located in the second floor area. These books have a yellow label on the book’s spine. These books can’t be borrowed and they can’t leave the library. Patrons are allowed to read them inside the library.

  • Journals and periodicals are located throughout the library including the second floor. These books can’t be borrowed or taken out of the library. These books don’t have barcodes.

  • Hunter students and faculty gain access to materials, journal articles and books not owned by Hunter College or CUNY through the ILL.
