Encyclopedias & Other Reference Works

The reference databases listed below contain encyclopedias and other reference works which may provide

  • definitions and basic overviews of topics
  • historical background
  • references to more in-depth sources on a topic (check for a bibliography, "works cited" or "further reading" section at the bottom of an entry)
  • primary sources (encyclopedias about historical periods often include a selection of primary sources)
