Data Management Planning

This guide provides data management planning resources to Hunter College students, faculty members, visiting scholars, and others.

Components of a Data Management Plan

According to Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research [ICPSR (2017)], an effective data management plan should include thirteen ( data description, access & sharing, metadata, intellectual property rights, ethics & privacy, format,  archiving & preservation, storage & backup, security, responsibility, existing data, selection & retention periods, and audience)  components. These components can be utilized as template “in assembling data management plans to accompany grant applications” (ICPSR, 2017, Framework for Creating a Data Management Plan section, para. 1).
