Data citation is a part of a data management plan (The University of Virginia Library, 2017, Data Management Components section, para. 2). According to the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (2017) website, “Proper citation ensures that research data can be: discovered; reused; replicated for verification; credited for recognition; and tracked to measure usage and impact” (Citing Data section, para. 1).
