Find Books and other materials

WHAT IS IT?

The Catalog is a database of the materials (books, e-books, DVDs, journal titles, etc.) that are held at each library in the CUNY system.

If you need a book that Hunter does not own, search the catalog for other CUNY schools that may have the title you need.

You can borrow books from other CUNY schools through CLICS: CUNY Libraries InterCampus Service. Click this link to learn how to borrow materials using CLICS. Books at Centro are listed in the library catalog.

To search for primary sources in the library catalog:

  • Start with the Basic Search

Example: Olaudah Equiano

  • If you get too many results, use the Advanced Search to narrow your search:
    • Search: diaries, speeches, interviews, maps AND your topic.

Example: diaries, speeches, interviews, maps AND Olaudah Equiano

Subject Searching

SEARCHING BY SUBJECT

In addition to searching by Title & Keyword, you can search by for books or articles by Subject. Library of Congress Subject Headings are used in libraries to organize materials by subject. This makes it easier for you to browse the shelves and find materials that are related.

Subject searching allows you to:

  • find books or articles written on a particular subject/particular person. For example Ignatius Sancho
  • find all of the materials in the catalog or database about the subject/person.

To search by subject:

  • select subject from the drop down
  • type in the person's name, last name first

In addition, once you have found a book you want to use, you can also use the subject headings in the catalog record to find additional books with the same subject heading available at Hunter or the CUNY libraries.
