Understanding Scholarly Research

What types of sources should I use for my research?  How, and in what types of materials, should I search to retrieve relevant and useful information?  Why should I bother to cite my sources?  The following short tutorials will help you better understand the research process.

    This tutorial from Joyner Library at East Carolina University explains the differences between popular, scholarly, and trade publications. It identifies the parts of scholarly articles and defines peer review.
  • Plagiarism and Academic Honesty
    This University of Sydney tutorial can help to clarify questions you may have about academic integrity and the importance of correctly citing your sources.
  • Formulating a Search Strategy
    From the Hunter College Libraries, this tutorial demonstrates the steps to take when searching for articles in online databases. You will learn how to find articles that are relevant to your topic using Boolean Operators, truncation, and nesting.
