Tools that Work with Word

Both RefWorks and EndNote offer plug-ins--used in conjunction with Microsoft Word, which allows users to insert citations while writing a paper.  These programs can, then, format in-text citations in the style specified and generate bibliographies.

Using Write-N-Cite in RefWorks:  From a library computer, open up Microsoft Word and select the RefWorks tab from the toolbar at the top of the document. Use the Insert Citation command when citing a source, and select the desired citation from your RefWorks account.  Be sure to set the Style preference to APA 6th Edition.  When you are ready to insert a bibliography at the end of the paper, click on Bibliography Options. To learn more about using Write-N-Cite, view the following RefWorks tutorial.

If working from a computer that does not yet have Write-N-Cite installed, select Write-N-Cite from the list under Tools in the RefWorks menu and download the appropriate version for your system.  Once installation is complete, the RefWorks tab should appear in Word.

Using Cite While You Write in EndNote:  From a library computer, open up Microsoft Word and select the EndNote X7 tab from the toolbar at the top of the document. Click the Go to EndNote command to view and select citations from your EndNote library. Be sure to set the Style preference to APA 6th Edition. The Cite While You Write program will simultaneously insert an in-text citation and add the formatted citation to the paper's bibliography.  For more help with inserting citations and creating bibliographies, see the EndNote training videos

If working from a computer that does not yet have EndNote installed, go to the library's EndNote page to download and install EndNote on your PC or Mac.  Once installation is complete, then the EndNote X7 tab should appear in Word.
