Getting Started with EndNote

EndNote allows you to store,  manage, and search for bibliographic references in your own library. You can collect and organize a wide assortment of materials, including images, citations,and documents.  The software is also has great tools that can help you create and and amend manuscripts and bibliographies in Microsoft Word.

To get started:

  1. Go to: http://library.hunter.cuny.edu/endnote
  2. Click on Download EndNote to your PC/Mac
    (or EndNote Web, but must be on campus for initial sign up)
  3. This will take you to an authentication page, log in with your NetID and Password
  4. This will take you to a page listing the different versions availaible and the minimum system requirements for operation
  5. After you choose the appropriate program  you must unzip/decompress the file to install correctly

Features:

  • Imports Metadata from a catalog, website, or database
  • Allows you to save and organize this metadata
  • Allows you to enter that information into documents and works cited pages
  • Compatible with Microsoft Word
  • Has a web portion, can transfer items between EndNote Web and EndNote
  • Can search library catalogs from within the program

Limitations:

  • Need Endnote Web account to transfer files between systems
  • All resources are permanetly stored on your hard drive
  • Requires filter to access metadata from different resources
  • More complex to learn full functionality
  • May require more assistance in getting started
